About this group trip

Alma de la Isla is our women's group trip to the Dominican Republic: 8 days designed and guided by Dominican women to discover the island beyond the all-inclusive resort. If you're thinking about traveling solo to the Dominican Republic, here you arrive on your own and travel in good company. You'll be in a small group of no more than 10 women, with a private room every night.

We travel through the three faces of the island. Culture in Santo Domingo, the Afro-Dominican city: Afro-Taíno cooking, centuries-old streets in the Colonial Zone and nights of bachata and merengue. Mountains, where the pace slows down among rivers, trails and waterfalls. And Beach, where the Caribbean becomes a celebration: days at sea, unhurried swims and nights by the water.

Nothing is chosen at random. We have walked and lived every place and every experience ourselves before offering it to you. You travel with our community: the guides, hosts, drivers, cooks and healers who make the island what it is every day. The money from your trip stays with the people here, and every day becomes an exchange of words, recipes, stories and dances.

This isn't just another trip. It's an invitation to belong.

What makes it different

  • Made by Dominican women. We design, coordinate and guide every trip ourselves, together with our local community.
  • A group made for you. A minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10 women. Once you book, we have a call with each traveler to get to know you and answer your questions.
  • Safe and inclusive. A safe choice for solo female travel in the Dominican Republic, and an inclusive space for LGBTQ+ travelers.
  • Your money stays on the island. It goes to family businesses and projects from our community.
Who it is for

This trip is for you if

You travel solo or with friends, you come from the diaspora or the island simply calls you. What our travelers have in common is that they are a bit all-terrain:

  • You love adventure: rivers, waterfalls, mountain trails and days at sea.
  • You want to meet new people, in the group and in every home that welcomes us.
  • You step out of your comfort zone, or you are eager to start.
  • You go with the unexpected: on the island plans change, and sometimes the best comes without warning.
  • You would rather live it in company than travel the island alone.

It may not be for you if you are looking for a resort, a minute-by-minute plan or a luxury trip.

Here we walk, we sweat, we share the table and we let the Caribbean vibe carry us

Step by step

The trip, day by day

Open each day to see what we will live.

Day 1 · ArriveSanto Domingo and the Colonial Zone
Four travelers smiling at a lookout with the sea behind them

Welcome to the island. Welcome home.

The trip begins the moment you land. We meet you at Santo Domingo airport and take you by private transfer to the Colonial Zone, the historic center of the city, where your hotel is.

In the evening, a welcome dinner at a cultural house. You meet the women you will travel with and your local host. Conversation, Dominican food and new faces that will soon be familiar.

Day 2 · RootsAfro-Dominican Santo Domingo
Fruit stand with bunches of bananas and pineapples

Today you understand the island through what is eaten and what almost no one tells.

In the morning, an Afro-Taíno cooking workshop with Maribel in the Colonial Zone. Cazabe, chenchén, mabí: ingredients where Taíno and African traditions meet, in recipes that are disappearing. We cook together and eat what we make.

In the afternoon, an Afro-history tour of the Colonial Zone, with guides who tell the Afro-Dominican history that never appears on the monument plaques.

At night, Santo Domingo is lived in the street: Dominican street food and a cultural gathering where bachata and merengue are danced with locals. You do not need to know how to dance. Here you learn by dancing.

Day 3 · MountainA family farm in the Dominican mountains
Green pond surrounded by mountains and vegetation

Today the city is left behind and the mountains set the clock.

We leave Santo Domingo for the interior. Halfway there we stop for a river adventure: the first freshwater swim of the trip.

Then we reach the farm of Kenida and don Carlos, who open their home the way you welcome family. We spend two nights here. The afternoon has no agenda: rest, walk among the trees, stay in the hammock or talk with them about life in the mountains.

Day 4 · SoulA hike and a wellness ritual in nature
Travelers at the foot of a waterfall in the mountains

Today the island stops being a landscape and starts to be something of yours.

We set out early to hike the mountains of the Dominican Republic, in search of waterfalls. It is a hike of about 8 km, of medium-high difficulty, which we will do at our own pace. At the end, a cold-water swim that wakes up the whole body is waiting.

Afterwards, surrounded by the sound of water and the hills, a wellness ritual to connect with ourselves, with the women beside us and with nature.

It is the heart of Alma de la Isla.

Day 5 · The roadToward the Sea
Dominican beach with palm trees against the light

Today the road is the trip too.

We say goodbye to the farm and to Kenida and don Carlos, and cross the island toward the beach. But we do not go straight there: a surprise stop and a whole day of adventure are waiting along the way. We will not tell you more. Just bring a swimsuit and an appetite for it.

Day 6 · SeaHiking between beaches
Golden sand and turquoise water framed by palm trees

Today the sea is explored on foot.

We walk the coast, following the shore and the trails that link one beach to the next. It is a route of about 5 km, of low difficulty. Our guide is Miguel, born in the village, who knows every corner and every shortcut of this coast.

We stop at each beach to swim, and halfway along we eat with flavors from the coast.

Day 7 · CelebrateA boat trip and snorkeling
Two travelers in life jackets laughing on a boat over turquoise water

The last day at sea, just as we deserve.

We leave Las Galeras on a private local boat with Miguel, our guide, heading for a beach you can only reach by sea. On the way we stop to snorkel and see what lives underwater.

Once on the beach, the food is cooked right there and eaten with your feet in the sand. The afternoon is for swimming, laughing and toasting to everything we have lived.

In the evening, the farewell dinner. A table to give thanks, tell each other what we are taking home and close surrounded by the women who started out as strangers at the first dinner.

Day 8 · IslandFarewell and transfer to the airport
Orange sunset over the sea with sailboats in the distance

The island does not say goodbye. It stays with you.

The last morning at the beach begins slowly. We have breakfast together one last time, with hugs and promises to come back, and there is still time for one last swim in the sea, the one you keep in your memory.

Then we take you to the airport by private transfer. You leave with a slightly fuller suitcase, with new friends and with the island, its people and its soul already inside you.

Melany was amazing! Highly recommend this walking tour. It was very informative and we enjoyed sampling the local fruits and hearing about the local culture. Lunch was very filling and we couldn't finish it all. Melany is a lovely warm person, and you don't be disappointed if you book this tour.

I really enjoyed my evening with Mel and another visitor. We had a delicious meal on the patio while chatting and learning about the culture of colmados. We visited one in my neighbourhood and then we went to enjoy some music. I danced at our first stop and watched at the second place. It was a fun evening with lovely company.

Melany y su equipo me hicieron vivir unas de las experiencias más hermosas de mi 2025. Conociendo lugares mágicos en el norte de ma isla, paraíso entre las montañas. Volvería con ellos por su calidad humana y autenticidad.

Great experience in Samana and Santo Domingo. Everything was well organized and everyone I met along the way, from drivers to tour guides, were lovely, welcoming, helpful and accomodating. Activities were great as well! I loved meeting and "doing" local.
